Camshaft ID

I recently purchased a Euro 3.0 Liter engine (930/09) that I am in the process of renewing due to cracked exhaust guides. The cams are marked 930 14708 & 930 14708. I have no idea if they have been re-ground or not. The previous owner stated that the engine had been rebuilt about 15,000 miles age with a lot of "high performance parts" but did not know specifics. I would like to find out what these cams are. Thanks, Phil

Those would be SC cams with the big nut style snout. If they have been ground, they should be stamped on the back. The most popular regrind profile would be the 964. If you can measure the base circle, you will find 1.260"-1.265" is stock. Below 1.240" would tend to be a performance type regrind.

John,
Wow! What a quick response. My inclination that they had been reground was on the basis that the exhaust valve guides were cracked due to the valve hitting the pistons. I thought maybe the cams had been reground and the engine builder did not use good enough valve springs. Thank you, Phil

The SC cams should be marked on the nut end with 930/147 and 930/148. down the side they will have numbers (the one in my hand is) 930 105 1477r. These are SC numbers, but, I worked on a set of cams I purchased last year for a 75 and they would not line up properly but said nothing on them other than stock numbers
The clue was a CIS engine usually starts moving to open the valve about 30 degrees or so BTDC and this cam was moving about 70 degrees BTDC.
All SC cams and Carrera cams are the same number and the same grind, just the settings are different for application.

Phil, Did you check the cam timing setting when you took the engine apart? Might have been an incorrect setting creating the V-P issues.

Bruce, the nut style cams will be the 930 105 147 7R part number (9301051487R for the right bank) and the 3.2 Carrera cams will have the bolt style with part number 930 105 147 9R
I have also seen some of the SC cams using the bolt-washer with the 9R part number. And you are correct, same profile with different settings.

The factory started using the bolt instead of the 46mm nut in 1981 or 82

I just pulled one of the cams out and it said WEB SS 1 04 20 21. I take it that this means they have been reground by Webcams to 20 21 in Jan 04? Thanks, Phil

all the engines after 81 or 82 have the bolt including 930

the date code sounds right. Probably welded cams with the SC casting numbers.
