Headers with heat exchangers for 87 Carrera?
 

Tearing down due to a broke head stud. Sure would be nice to put some headers on at this point. Are there any headers made that would have heat exchangers or a way to get heat in the car?

SSI's would be the best option for to you.

There are other manufacturers who make headers with heater boxes but these don't
come close to genuine SSI's for quality.

Several years ago there was a picture of someone's neat trick to put a small box over one of the headers for heat. It looked like something I could use in florida where you rarely need heat but sometimes in the early morning need defrost.

Does anyone remember it?

You can build a little heat exchanger to fit around headers, then you can use any header you like. I just got TRE 1 5/8" stainless headers and should have the mini-HEs finished end of next week. Granted, the heat output will be nothing like SSIs, but it should be enough to clear the screen and take the chill off. Once you start tuning a 3.2 or larger engine, the SSIs are by consensus smaller than ideal.

I might try that. You don't need much here in Florida but the defroster would be nice. I'll be pulling my 2.7L shortly to put in the 3.0L, I'll have a look at it then.
