Machine shop in Cincinnati
Does anyone know of a good machine shop? I have a 69S that had compression issues in cylinder #1. When I pulled the head, I had a blown head to cylinder gasket. Wayne suggests that you take the head to the shop to get checked out. Would a blown gasket warp the surface of the head? Thanks.

The head gaskets on 2,0 liter engines aren't really used to seal the head to cylinder-- the seal is achieved between the mating surface on the head and the top of the cylinder. If the gasket is "blown" that suggests that there was a problem with one of the mating surfaces. Can you post photos? This would be interesting to see. There are plenty of shops who can help you, I'm not sure if they are in Cincinnati, but you can send the head by insured freight. 69S heads are the rarest and most expensive of all (well, mostly all).

![]() I'm sorry about the terrible quality of the picture. It was taken from a black berry. You can see the carbon buildup on the right side of the head. that is where the gasket was disintegrated when I pulled the head off. Also, I should clarify. The engine was built to an S-spec via a 69E. The heads are 69E with the standard 42 and 36mm intake and exhaust ports. Don't quote me on those sizes I'm going off memory. The cams are early solex and the pistons are 2.0L S. In the bottom picture, you can see where the left side of the gasket was compromised. So far, tolerances have been good. The ring gap and side clearance are within spec, the intake and exhaust valves don't have any measurable taper. I was thinking that the heads may need to be fly cut to ensure they have a smooth mating surface. Please chime in if I'm forgetting anything as I am a newbie to this. ![]() I do have a question. Is it possible to fix the items on the left side and leave the right side alone? The right side had equal compression readings of 145 and the leakdown was under 8% in all cylinders. Thanks. |
