SC or Carrera?
I heard that some people like the throttle response on SCs better than a Carrera, Is there any truth to this? Is the Carrera a better choice in vehicles if im looking to buy or is a well mantained SC a wise investment?

The Carrera is close to the same money but with better power and I like the interior of the 85 and later better.

The Carrera is a bit heavier than most SCs I think.

The crankcases on the 3.2 are much stronger. The 3.2 has the factory oil feed tensioners. Plus the Motronic unit handles alot of the emission controls for the Carrera and all the extra plumbing in the engine bay is not needed. This will make the car a pleasure to work on.
I have driven many 911SC in the past that had sparkling acceleration but the 3.2 has the torque. Consider a nice 1984 Carrera before a really nice 911SC in the same price range. If you can go higher...the 1988 and 1989 Carreras are really nice. Good Luck. |
Carreras get better gas mileage than SCs, if that matters to you. About 20 mpg on highway for an SC versus 25 mpg for a carrera 3.2, thanks to the motronic injection.

I get 25 in my SC.

A lot of SC owners will tell you they like them better. In many cases (note I didn't say all) what else would you expect them to say?
The Carrera's have more development and improvements incorporated from the factory. They are arguably the better car. A good case for the "buy the newest Porsche you can afford mantra" that is so prevalent when discussing Porsche purchases. But why take my word for it? Ask the independent shop owners who make a living servicing both and see what they say. They should be able to back up one side over the other. |

Buy the best car that you can find in your price range. The last of the Carrera's (87-89) are considered the best of the torsion bar cars. They are all $20,000 cars, most of the time more. Very few of these cars could be considered an investment, unless you figure out how to use it as a tax write off:D

Not having driven many of them myself, I can't say which would be better except that If given the choice in a mid year car, I would choose a car with a G50 box. |
Never noticed any difference in throttle response between an SC and Carrera. A lighter midyear car will appear to have more throttle response. My MFI '72 is the snappiest. My CIS '76 is pretty good, much better than I expected. Compared to those two, my DME '84 (sold) was a limo.
