MFI Puzzle - can anyone solve?
I have a 2.2s and am in the process of rebuilding the engine (type 911/02). When we were tearing down, we found that I have a 1969 2.0s pump (ending 005) with twin solenoids on it when it should have a pump with one solenoid ending 009.
I don't have any history on the car pre 2000 (ie when I bought it from California over to the UK), so it is possible that at some stage it was changed, but the rest of the engine is in original condition throughout, suggesting that it was pretty much unmolested. I've had the pump cleaned, overhauled & set-up for a 2.2s and the (very reputable) rebuilder told me that the 2.0s and 2.2s pumps were relatively similar, it was only when they moved to the 2.4 that the internals were different. So the question is this: in your experience, is it possible that an early 1970 2.2s engine could have a late 1969 MFI pump factory fitted thus explaining the anomaly or is the more likely explanation that the pump was changed at some stage in its life? Many thanks. |

Anything can happen but the differences between the systems are sufficiently great (cold-start mechanism, for example) that I think it's unlikely that the factory did it. Probably the pump has been switched. Not that it's a bad thing-- the early pumps are very useful for racing use.

Thanks
Thank-you, I suspect you're right, shame really, I wonder what happened to the original....
I've been running it for 10 years without any issues. Having it properly overhauled, recalibrated and mated with restored throttle bodies and some new injectors should be OK 'til I can track down a 009 pump. All the best, |

John,
Do you know what makes the early pumps so good for racing use? I have heard that too, but didn't know why. Paul. |

Murph2309, Who did you buy the car from? I've had a couple of bad experiences with "so-called builders" and the use of mis-matched, worn out parts.

2.2s MFI
I bought it 10 yrs ago from an importer to the Uk who got it from 'a contact' in California. Apparently it had been sitting in a barn or something for about 10 years and was in rust-free, if tatty condition when bought.
I really knew nothing then, and superbly helpful sites like this didn't exist to my knowledge. It's been a brilliant car to drive & own, but it's at the stage where it needs proper TLC to ensure it's next 40 yrs or so. Hence the engine rebuild. Its been through 2 or 3 mechanics since I've had it, but its only since I've been getting the engine stripped & renovated by somebody who really knows what they're doing (Mike B in the UK, full respect to you) that I've come across this issue. The company I bought it from were at best clueless (there are probably more suitable & harsher words to use) but because of that I suspect the change had happened before they got hold of it - they wouldn't have known about subtleties like different MFI pumps... The rebuild is now in its final stages - everything's been done from oil mod on the crank & bypass mod on the case, through flywheel lightening & crank balancing, new pots & pistons, valves, springs, chains, MFI rebuild (& calibrated for a 2.2s), throttle bodies, airbox, valve covers. And the gearbox rebuilt. I've even spent some time over the holiday painting red leather shoe dye on the fan shroud so that it looks the part....wife & kids think I'm nuts, but it does look good. A lot of pelicaneers have sold me parts on the way to the re-build and have contributed to the overall project. If anyone is interested, I'll post a few before & after pictures towards the end of Jan when I get it back. |

Yesterday, 02:36 PM I'd be very interested to see the pictures. Thank you!
