Serial number, quick question?

Have an 87 930. Previous owners did lots of mods. Have the motor out to reseal it, spruce it up, adjust the valves, etc. Fun winter project .

On the case, between the valve covers, the serial number starts with a 964...

Is it possible the car had a newer motor put in, or can this still be an 87 930 motor? Any easy ways to tell?

Also, odd question on the passenger cam cover. It doesn't want to come off at the bottom. I removed all the nuts, cam lines, tensioner lines. Top wants to come off, bottom doesn't? Anything I need to look for? Never had this issue with other 911 motors. Perhaps he used some gasket sealent, but I don't want to force it... and break something.

Thats a casting number for the cam carrier. About that time the factory started using the future parts in line. The basic difference from the 930 was in the future there would be a rubber seal to the cam oil lines instead of a threaded banjo bolt.
I saw it on an 88 that i did, they are interchangable until the C2 then the threads are not tapped for the banjo fitting.
