Help on last step prior to case split
 

This is probably a dumb question. I have checked the Haynes book, Wayne's Book, the Bently book, the DIY Brit book, and the Porsche parts book. I cannot figure out how to get the clutch to come off the engine crank prior to splitting the case.:confused:

The ring gear and the pressure plate come off OK by removing the M8 hex head bolts. Here is the picture of the ring with the pressure plate:

How does the ring gear seperate from the pressure plate? It looks like there are three bolts on springy metal straps that will come apart.

Some of the books call this the driven plate. It is part number 911 11604, cluthch plate, in the parts manual.

Wayne's book shows removing several splined nuts. As you can see in the picture, there are not any spline nuts visible. Does the whole driven plate just slide off the main spline? It seems bound to the piece that the pressue plate hex bolts fit into. The ring gear / pressure plate piece bolts solidly to the outer ring in this second picture. As the starter motor spins the ring gear while the clutch is depressed to start the engine, the driven plate must be allowed to spin independently from the ring gear assembly??????

Is this a 'get a bigger hammer' problem, or am I missing a bolt or two? What am I missing?

That clutch disc should fall right off so a hammer wont hurt because that is a rubber hub and you won t put that back together with that clutch. The ring gear just taps off.

Thanks, Bruce! I just came back from Lowe's with a rubber mallet, so I will go whack it a couple of times.

Rick, Youre just down the road, im between Raleigh and Rocky Mount just off 64. I ve got a couple engines in the garage right now, little cold so im not getting much done.

Bruce, thanks. six or seven hits with the rubber mallet worked! the driven disc just fell out. Working now on opening the case. I am just south of Pittsboro, north of Sanford. garage temp was around 45 degrees today.

Yes, it was warm enough to be in the garage but I opened the door to lot the sun in along with the warmth. I got hung up on the install of the 78 3.0 so I walked away from it, warmed up and went out this evening, walking the doge, turned off the light..save the rest for Monday..
