Mikes 3.5
How I spent my thursday morning.
Supertec built this 3.5 Motronic engine for Mike G last thursday while Mike watched and took these pictures. The car is an 88 3.2 Cabriolet. The engine has LN Nickies 100mm, JE piston 9.8:1 and DC Super Cup cams. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090203.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090246.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090272.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090282.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090292.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090305.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090324.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264090409.jpg |

Single or Dual Plug
Is that a single plug setup? The heads appear to have one spark plug.

Thanks for sharing.. cool looking!

Single plug
May I ask why you chose to go with a single plug setup in a 3.5L motor?
Thanks Mark |

Very clean....nice work.....

going 3.5, was there any concerns around using the SSI's as distinct from a larger exhaust choice? I thought the SSI's were considered as a little to restrictive for a motor that size ?

In a perfect world a slightly larger primary might be desirable for higher end operation but for the purpose of this exercise, the SSI seems like the best compromise. |
Nice! All that gold plating makes it look like P-Diddy's engine! :D

very nice. Any HP and torque estimates ?

But the truth is, unless you're willing to change parts "you get what you've got". |
265- 300 Wow !. Regardless of what the final number is it will be strong motor and a great ride.
I have to admit though that I get confused with how successful these 3.4 and 3.5 upgrades are in increasing power from a 3.2. If a 3.6 with higher compression puts out 250 HP, i am always baffled that a base 3.2 upgraded to a 3.4 or 3.5 can exceed what a 3.6 puts out so easily? |
Better exhaust and better cams are the key as well as the higher RPMs achieved by these smaller engines.
BTW: that's 265 hp 300 ft/lb of torque |

Great looking motor. Color combo is unique, which I like.

Did you use the slip-in or machine-in 100mm Nickies? Do you think the same piston/cam combo would work OK with CIS using the early heads and intakes on an SC with a 3.2 crank/rods?
Thanks and nice work. |
I believe the slip in 100s end up just a touch too thin so if you can (I.E.: the case is split) I would always recommend boring the case. We did.
The CIS injection tends to get lean on a constant / steady cruise and with a 3.5 this would be exacerbated. If CIS is the direction you go, watch out for lean cruise. A reworked CIS will deliver enough fuel otherwise. |

do you mean to make bigger stud spacing for the 100mm cylinders? (3.6 LITERS STUDSPACING?) or what might be the trick? (i would guess that with these slip in 100mm cylinders you might have a weaker cylinder after all....) IM INTERESTED because i also have 100mm cylinders and 3.0 engine to start. Although a larger stud spacing might allow for a stronger cylinder there is no need to go that far.
The issue is cylinder thickness at the base of the cylinder where it go into the case. Nickie 100s are manufactured in two different configurations. The slip in cylinders are designed to fit the stock 3.0 and Carrera spigot. The better choice are the cylinders designed to fit a spigot that has been opened 2 mm. This cylinder has a wall thickness 1 mm or .040" greater creating a much stronger cylinder. |
Final pictures of Mike's 3.5 rebuild.

Wow, That looks like everything I just got done doing except in Fast forward at 100 times... Oh and the engine is already installed in this thread. no so for mine.
I can't believe how much less cluttered the engine bay is with out the engine mounted blower motor. Excellent job Henry! Richard |
Build sequence
Henry-
it looks like you put the heads on built up with the cam towers, cams, and rockers all installed. Is this how you usually do it ? And if so why ? Daniel |

And what would the cost be to go twin plug on this engine (ballpark)? Thanks. - Michael |

I got this text the day Mike headed home. "Asian kid in a late model 300 ZX trifled with me. Not sure if it was a turbo or not as he quickly disappeared in my rear view mirror". This stuff is supposed to be fun. Mike sounds like he's having fun. |
Chamfer?
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I am doing a very similar build. Are the heads chamfered? I can’t quite make it out in the picture. Most threads I found on the 98/100mm builds say to chamfer. If not, any benefit to the extra squish at the edge? JE & EBS said chamfering is not needed due to the wide flat at the edge of the piston.
Thanks again for sharing. Rick |
The oil return tubes look "extra glossy". Along w/ the other hardware, they look great!
Were they replated too? |

How do you get the aluminum on the case and trans to look so good? Is the plating yellow cadmium? Beautiful engine (as is the 2.5 in a different thread) |
