intermediate shaft gear removal

Has anyone removed either of the gears off the intermediate shaft? I'm in the middle of my rebuild and i'm trying to replace these gears. So far i've removed the large snap rings and tried pulling by hand and made an attempt with a gear puller. I also tried a gear puller plus heat. Am I missing something? This is a 80 3.0.

Its been a few years but what I remember is get a GOOD puller on the gear and it has to pull straight!!! crank in as much as you can on the puller, add heat to the gear an it will "pop" right off. Now when you put the gear back on do the hot and cold deal and be quick, you only get one chance to get it lined up.

As I recall the aluminum gear is just bolted on. The sprockets are an interference fit and need a puller of some kind. Heat the sprockets to re-install with a pipe over the shaft and a hammer. Or just take the thing to Napa and have them do it.

For the removal I mounted the puller and made sure it was tight then added heat for a few mins and tightened the puller again. After about two cycles the gear popped off.

For the installation I put the shaft in the freezer for over an hour and the gears in the oven at 400 deg F. for about 30 mins. The gears slide right on with no force needed. Anyone attempting this should make sure you get the orientation correct the first time otherwise you might not get a second chance.
