911 engine in 912 questions
I have a 65 912 body (3 gauge dash) that I would like to put a 911 engine into. My #1 question is: is the 912 wiring harness the same? or do I need to splice in parts or us a 911 wiring harness? Somewhere I got the idea that they are the same.
I know I need to change motor mounts, and add the oil tank and holes for same in the right side engine wall. What else is required? Does anyone have a nice website where they document turning an early 912 into a "911 clone"? Or have some nice pictures you can email me? Thanks davehanning@aol.com |
Early wiring is all the same.
912 Motor mounts need to be removed and 911 mounts added. 901 501 083 20. Right side sheet metal is the same, just drill the hole with the appropriate hole saw and install tank. Not much else to do. Here's one we did. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1267029803.jpg |
Thanks Henry, that is good info. Just out of curiosity, I know 1969 has a one year only type or wiring deal in the engine compartment. The engine wires plug into a panel, is the 69, 912 and 911 wiring harness also the same, like the 68 and earlier. I know the engine compartment part that plugs in is different but is the main trunk the same?
Thanks again, David |
I believe they are identical. But I could be mistaken. The thing to remember about Porsche wiring is that it is consistent. If You have a green/black wire on one chassis it does the same thing on a different chassis be it 911 or 912.

Your motor choice will dictate whatever else needs to be done. For example, my son and I did this conversion on his '68 912 last year (for his high school senior year project - he got an "A":D). The motor we used was a 2.4 with MFI. That drove some additional requirements, like a return line to the gas tank, some MFI specific wiring, an MFI fuel pump, and whatnot. None of it was a big deal at all. CIS would have its own requirements, and carbs would be the most straight-forward.
His '68 tub didn't have the engine harness multi-pin connector in its under hood wiring, where the 2.4 going in did. The 2.4 had a more modern, internally regulated alternator, where the 912 had a regulator mounted inside the left fender. None of this was even a big deal; like Henry says, the same color wire does the same thing regardless of tub. We simply compared 912 and 911 wiring diagrams and connected everything from there. Depending on ignition, you might need to get the 912 tach redone. Ours didn't like the MSD 6AL box we used. I tried an SC tach and it didn't like that either, so we finally sent one to North Hollywood Speedometer to have it set up for the MSD box. There was something weird about the oil tank as well. I can't remember off the top of my head, but it was something about the bottom mount. The top mounts are straightforward, but it seems to me we had to weld a bracket on the tub or something for the bottom. It's been awhile... I'm sure Henry knows and can straighten me out. Anyway, it's all pretty straightforward stuff. My kid and I did it with no prior experience or special knowledge. You shouldn't have any trouble. |
Do you really have a '65 912? If so you might consider the value of it as a 912. True '65 MY cars are few and far between and quite a prize when restored.
Dating a true '65 912 is a bit more difficult from a 911 as all the references to change over dates reference the 911 VIN's. You might want to spend some time redearching just what you have before taking sawzall to it. The topic of dating a '65 911 is much discussed on the 911 S board and here is a recent discussion on the 912bbs: 912 Board - Viewing Topic: 35xxxx series cars |
