P140 alternative possibly a bad idea?
Instead of buying the p140 tool to hold the barrels to case during cylinder installation, I made my own. They were just a simple steel spacer from lowes and a head stud nut. I only hand tightened them with no major torque applied. Later when I removed them I noticed they etched a little indentation into the top of the cylinder.
So my major concern is do I need to get heads machined down now or will they be fine due to the cylinder head gaskets keeping the seal? The indentations weren't major, but deep enough that your fingernail will catch them. Matt |
This is one of those times where a pic may be worth something. I'd not expect head gaskets to compensate for a gouge you can feel-that is not what they are designed to do. But, then again, others may have different thoughts.
I used copper pipe-nice and soft. |
Agree with Ed on pictures. I used the 1/2 sockets as they are exactly the right size. A cheap closeout set from Target worked well.

3/8 chrome plated/brass plumbing supply tubing, cut to size. Worked well for me.
And did not touch the sensitive part of the cylinder. Mike. |

Thanks for the reassurance Preston. I also noticed what appears to be corrosion accumulating at the bottom of the lip where the gasket rests. I'm wondering if it is from extra fuel pooling up after the motor is turned off or possibly flooded. Has anyone else noticed this before?

Also does anyone know the spark plug thread size and pitch? I want to chase them before putting the heads back on.
