hydraulic tensioners
Hello everyone, first time I've posted on here.I know there are loads of articles about tensioners but I really could do with some help.I have a 1976 2.7 targa which has just been upgraded to hydraulic tensioners complete with new ramps and chains. So far so good but after she warmed up there was still a rattle. Not at tickover or with revs on but on the die down of the engine.Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Use a automotive stethoscope or a long screwdriver held up to your ear and touch several locations where you think the noise is coming from, Might be able to pin point that noise.

Did try that and it does sound like chain rattle again on right bank.Do you think we could have done anything wrong on the installation ???

Yes

Take the cover off before you start it and check if the tensioner is not collapsed. also check if it is getting oil, those small oil lines can sometime get clogged.

Well, the right tensioner is the culprit.Having removed it and tried the old mechanical tensioner in its place, instant cure!! the piston on the new tensioner dosen't seem to have any pressure at all.

You can try to bleed it. Submerge the entire tensioner into a container of oil. Use something like a pair of channel lock pliers and try squeezing and releasing the piston. You should see air bubbles and the tension will get hard. If it doesn't it's probably bad.
