New Mahle pistons/cylinders 2.7
Anyone here that's bought new Mahle piston/cylinder kits did you also check the ring end gap? If so that were your results? Were they in spec per the manuals at 0.1mm to 0.2mm (0.004" to 0.008")? This spec is to the 2.7 CIS kits.

The $2000 answer
I sprang for a new mahle set and the results of the ring end gap averages at 0.011", a few at 0.013" and one at 0.009". Three measured at 0.013" were all at #2 ring, the top ring and oil ring mostly at 0.011".
This is a big improvement from the goetze rings that measured, #3 = 0.016" #2 = 0.024" #1 = 0.017" I also checked the weight, my scale will read to the closest 1 gram. Five piston and pin combos weighed 545g or 546g, one weighed 544g, I could have the others brought down to the last one but I'll probably just install the light one at #1 or #4. Also the new pistons have some scrape marks on the side looks like from ring installation, not real bad looking. I assume this isn't a big deal. Should I just remove the burr with a emery board? |
