HELP with engine specs

I am preparing to convert my '68 912 to a 911 engine would like some advise. I have gotten a engine (1974) with rebuilt webers. Number on top of the fan housing is 901 106 101 5R and stamped on case on the right side is *64D4709*. I am trying to determine motor spec's and any help would be appreciated. The engine mount bar has a dampener and a center pivot and it came out of a car with a 915 trans. Any help as to spec's , displacement, proper clutch for motor etc will be appreciated

The engine not turning so I am assumming a rebuild but it may be due to sitting for extended time. Carbs look brand new except velocity stacks which are rusty Can I squirt something down the spark plug holes and carbs to see if it will free up?

In the general area of the *number* should be a stamp like 911/83. It is the "type number". The fan shroud number is just the part number for the fan housing ring.

Doug

A "64D...." serial number would be a 1983 3.0 SC with a type number of 930/16.

This engine would have come originally with a fan ring casting having a 930 casting number (not the 901 casting number that you have on yours).

Check the serial number again and the type number on the case next to the RHS chain housing. A serial number of "645..." would be a 1975 2.7 motor.

Damper sounds like the engine came out of a cab.

Tom,

You have guessed correctly . The type # is 930/16 which means I have a 1983 3.0....COOL!the flywheel has 3 small center bolts, missing , inside the ring of 9 bolts. Does that tell us anything else about this engine ,or is that standard for that year? Should I upgrade my 901 tranny to a 915 to handle the extra hp? Is the starter the same for the 901 & 915? I will also be looking for the correct clutch to match it up. I will obviously be visiting our host site....Thank you for your insight.

AND SO IT BEGINS!

911s up through the 2.7 used 6 bolts for the flywheel to crankshaft. With the introduction of the 3.0 liter engines and the larger bore center spacing Aluminum case, the flywheel was secured with 9 bolts. Not sure what you have since the short stroke early cranks do not fit in the later cases.

Now that we know it is a 3.0 motor, the motor mount from a cab (none sold before the SCs) makes sense. I'd replace it when you install this into your car.

The 3 missing small bolts in the flywheel center are for holding the pilot bearing in. You don't have a pilot bearing, obviously.

You cannot bolt your 901 transmission easily to this flywheel. The flywheels for that transmission were all 6 bolt, so you can't just retrofit. But someone no doubt makes something you can use to connect a 901 to the 9 bolt flywheel. Patrick Motorsports? Do a search of the Pelican 911 forum.

Do you still have the Nadella funky universal sort of joints on the drive shafts? You want to upgrade from those if so. One of the problems with going to a 915 is getting CVs and axles which all fit on both ends. Common issue - search for answers on Pelican 911.

All 911s can use the same starter. Myself, I favor using an aftermarket geared starter. But they all will fit.

What do you mean by not being able to turn the engine over? If you use a long breaker bar with a socket on the engine pulley (remove the motor mount so you can get at it easily), it wont budge? That could be trouble.
