1983 911sc transmission rebuild
Pretty new to this but have an 83 911sc cab and was just told that I need to have my transmission rebuilt..(and while it is in there that i should replace the clutch). Can anyone give me a ballpark and what I can expect to pay for a quality job? I live in CT.
tks |
You want to call Gary Fairbanks in Norwalk CT
The best Porsche gearbox guy on the East Coast. Fair prices and honest. |
Very hard to say, as manual transmissions are very expensive to begin with and you do not yet know what needs replacing. A simple teardown could result in much more work than anyone may think.
I think last time I had one looked at the quote was 3500.00 with synchros all around. Ended up doing ti myself. |
My P-mechanic Quoted me $500.00 pp to fix my 915.
For 1 syncro and 1 dog teeth set, or whatever. Sounds like a great price. The parts sounded pretty reasonable too. Leakproof. |
+1 on the Gary Fairbanks, especially in Ct...

No offense here, but who told you you needed a rebuild? Someone w/ 915 knowledge? If not used to the 915 some people will think its trashed... Do you think you need a rebuild? Might just need a good linkage adjustment... You might also have loose studs in the fork plate. I did and it was a PITA to shift. $15 later I had a new used plate + fork installed. Easy peasy lemon squeezy! Sounds to me like the person telling you you need a rebuild can't do it them selves so you may wish to find a 2nd opinion.
You can not do better than Gary... $3500 for a rebuilt 915 when YOU supply the core! Dude! That's way out of line for a simple re-fresh. So is $500 parts included unless you are talking only 1 synchro in parts. best regards, Michael |
