Hi Bruce, My 84 Euro 3.2 engine is overheating and smoking more than normal, my oil consumption is around one quart per 400 miles, so I decided to pull out spark plugs for checking condition, and found out, that the Left engine bank plugs were carbon & oil fouled, meanwhile the right bank plugs were in perfect condition, I think this is not common, but I've been told that I should do the valve guides rebuilt on the pistons 1,2,& 3, maybe this worn valve guides are also causing the engine to smoke and overheat, will you please guys, give me some advises, on what should I do???? I want to thank you in advance for your assistance and suggestions.

Your smoke is most likely guides, but do all the heads because you already have to strip the engine.
overheating is caused by poor running or poor cooling. Check the top of the on board cooler and see if the mice have been there making beds. Check and see if the front cooler right front is hot to the touch to see if the thermostat is working in front of the right rear wheel. Pull the engine and ship it to someone if you dont want to do it yourself but the heads are always the weak spot on the 911 engines. Bruce |

Bruce Thank you for your prompt answer, I already checked oil thermostat in the right rear wheel and is working OK, I pulled fan to check for debris on top of the engine, pretty clean, so I don't understand why the overheating issue, somebody suggested that worn valve guides can cause overheating, but I really don't know, so don't you think is good to rebuild just the left bank valve guides???? here in town there are not Porsche specilaist, that's why I think in just rebuild the left side. best regards. Cesar.

If you aren't willing to do this right and do both sides as suggested, you'll probably be kicking yourself later. These engines should not be short-cutted when repaired.

You don't "need" to split the case for this. That depends on the miles and care the engine has been given. If you don't have anyone locally, I'd get on the horn with some of the builders here and pick one that you like, and send the heads to them for inspection and repair/rebuild. It may be that you need to replace a valve or two or six, and you're best to let a pro help you with the decision. You'll also want to inspect the cams, rockers and cam towers to make sure there are no problems there. Now is the time to address the entire top end when you have it apart.

Ed Thank you very much for your suggestion, here in town there are a few specialist on VW engines, I know one who modifies them for track, he sais that he knows Porsche engines, I will decide next week what should I do in order to rebuilt those valve guides, meanwhile please recomend myself to some of the builders, to get in touch with them, and check regarding job prices.
Best regards. Cesar |
