Torn Down ready to hit the machine shop
 

Hi guys well I have the motor torn all the way down now, took me about 8 hours over a few days what with kids and other s*%t. Thankfully the cams both look ok, crank looks good, both case halves ok. So tomorrow I am off to the machine shop and just looking for some advise as to what else to have them check.
Current plan is to have them bead blast the case halves.
Check the crank bore for alignment and ID
Magnaflux and polish the crank
Magnaflux the cams prior to re-gring to 964 specs

Anything else I should be doing?

Oh and hows this the X5 had to be towed to the dealer Saturday last week as the car told me oil pressure low. Got a call from the service dept telling me the enigne is sludged up????? WTF says I car only has 20,000kms on it? Upshot is engine is toast new one being shipped from Germany as I type. Not having much luck with motors these days!!!!

Consider haveing the Chain boxes milled to accept the later 3.2 style gaskets.

G2 performance faced my rockers and polished the shafts for me. Craig did a very nice job, fast turn around.

Dont bead blast the case, too much leftover hanging around you cant get out of the nooks and crannies.

The case can be soda blasted or tumbled to clean it up.

Tumbled is the way to go - the results are stunning.

Thanks for the replies guys. I contacted a good local shop today who do most everything I am looking for so I am off to see then monday. Looks like I may have a deal on P&C's as well within budget so thngs are looking up.

X2. I had mine done and it turned out PERFECT! Hell, I had a complete 901 transmission done also (Put a normal 14mm bolt in place of the breather). Looks great. I would post pics but it is at the engine builders :)
FYI, it only cost $200 for every alum engine part and the complete trans! I had them just use tiny plastic cleaning media so it didnt polish it too much. Looks like new!

What exactly is "tumbling"? I googled and came up with a myriad range of stuff but nothing that was related.

Tumbling is a large vibratory bowl that can have different types of media in it.

The part gets put in the large bowl and the small pieces of media vibrate around it and clean and/or polish it. It depends on the type of media. They did mine with a plastic media so that it only cleaned it. I wish I had pictures but my cases turned out amazing! They can also use rough ceramic ones that will actually give aluminum a very very shiny polished look. It is actually pretty amazing. Here is a Pic of an old 901 that I had done complete.
