smoking engine
 

I have had a porsche 1977 911S for over 10 years with limited driving due to some items that appear to be almost completely out of my control. The engine is pretty stock. I started a project on the engine (not removed) to try and fix some oil leaks which are the contributors to the smoking that occurs while I drive the car. Smoke billows out of areas in and around the engine compartment. My assumption was that after I replaced the oil return tubes with the adjustable types and also replacing the lower valve covers with beefy alum ones, this would solve all my problems, wrong!!!

I still get oil to drizzle onto the heat exchanger from somewhere and generate a ton of smoke while driving. I have not removed the dreaded thermal reactors, but this would not prevent oil leaks, just doesn't help with cooling, correct?

WIll I have to remove the engine to get at these leaks? How can I find them? Any suggestions would help. Maybe I breakdown (and cry) and remove the engine and do it right. Remove the thermal reactors - these things look like the reatining bolts are welded to the adjoining heat exchangers from the ultra high heat, is this right? How do i remove them like this?

Remove your valve covers and check your rockers for the shafts moving off location. Each shaft has a large boss and a thinner boss to hold the shafts. You want the shaft to be just above flush with the narrow side.
This problem is a direct oil leak to the heat boxes.
