help for pulled head studs on 2.7
I have a 77 2.7 that until recently ran good, its always leaked some oil. Now it sounds like it has an exhaust leak. I read about pulled head studs and removed the two lower valve covers. On the side with more oil I checked the head bolts and 2 of the four were hand loose. The depth of the stud in one of the nuts was visibly higher up in the other three but not flush with the top of the nut. I was going to remove the top valve covers and torque the nuts to about 15 lbs sequentially, but was stopped due to some info on the subject. I think in order to screw the stud in deeper into the block I would need to remove the cylinders. By tightening the hex nut it appears that it only screws lower on the top threads as it is tightened. It appears that the head stud(s) has unscrewed and there is some info that it actually stretched. I am somewhat leary of putting too much torque on a head stud that's not all of the way inserted into the threads of the mg. block. From the web site I did locate a shop in CA. that for $2900 will dismantle and rebuild the 2.7, which I am also leary of as the price seems just too cheap. I am new to this site and would appreciate any info on the above subject from more experienced owners. Thank you, D.K.
