Question for the builders- oil consumption (3.4 conversion)

Data:

3.2--->3.4 conversion in '84 Carrera

- JE Pistons, 95mm Mahle factory cylinders overbored 3 to 98mm. Supposedly Goetz oil rings supplied with the set which is what I used.

- Teflon valve seals on intake and exhaust valves.

- Ring gaps and orientations observed on assembly.

- Oil pump reused from old motor, spider gears in excellent shape

Engine is at 2000 miles, is consuming 20w50 at a rate of a little better than a half quart every 500 miles. Some oil observed on spark plugs and plug threads, does not look like there is 1 particular offending cylinder. Motor goes like nuts, 6,850 rpm no problem.

What is reasonable oil consumption? I think this is excessive and annoying, my old high mileage engine did not do this. Oil puffs inconsistently on startup. Oil is most definitely NOT overfilled and is run 1/2 way between dots on dipstick when hot.

If I do pull this back apart, what am I looking for?

Hi,

One would need a LOT more detailed information to offer anything constructive. :) :)

Things such as:

Piston to cylinder wall clearances
Ring gaps
Leakdown figures
Valve-stem-to guide clearances

The rings should have seated by 2K if the cylinders were properly deglazed and correct break-in procedures were followed.

Teflon guide seals are well known for passing more oil than the factory Viton ones and for those reasons, we do not use them except in special circumstances.

Thanks Steve- I am going to toss you a PM if that's cool.
