930 case question - is this normal?

I got my case back from the machine shop and split it to clean the inside before assemby. While I was cleaning I noticed this cut out in the case with what looks like an inserted sleeve. This is the oil channel from the block thermostat to the oil cooler on the right half of the case. It looks like it was damaged or cut and a sleeve inserted. This is my first rebuild and it doesn't look right. Any idea on if this is okay? Can I just clean up the rough edges and continue building?

Thanks

YES, it's part of the casting process. Nothing to worry about.

The steel sleeve is laid into the mold prior to introducing the aluminum. The exposed area is where the sleeve rests in the mold.

Great thanks for the good news. But do you know why the "window" in the casting is so jagged with bright edges? It looks like something broke off. Should I try to smooth this out? I don't want any loose casting fragments drifting through the case after I rebuild it.

Leave it alone, you'll be fine.
Mine's the same.

It's jagged due to the aluminum forcing it's way into the area. Ideally the steel tube/aluminum would have a crisp perimeter. The aluminum is too thin, since it's not supposed to be there. As a result it breaks up forming the jagged edge.

If you are worried about it, apply epoxy over the whole area to prevent anything from falling off.
