Which is easyer to rebuild, 915 or G50?
For somone that is mechanical but not experanced in transmissions, which is easyer to work on or rebuild.
A 915 or a G50? |
915, hands down!!
|
Case closed.
Thanks Steve! |
Not that I need to confirm Steve's assessment, but the 915 is way easier. Teardown in an hour. THe G50 requires more tools, special gear pullers, and god forbid you let the springs come out of the syncro assembly!
|
Any good manuals for rebuilding the g50?
Thanks. |
Yes,...the factory shop manuals. :)
You'll still need all the special tools, fixtures and some exerience to assure a good outcome. |
I recommend the Porsche transmission rebuild course at SmartRacing. They may have a class late this fall. Well worth the cost of tutition.
|
Thanks Steve and VMisquez.
A course sounds great. I will check it out. |

I do remember a place in Southern California, Downey to be exact, that does rebuild transmissions (along with other activities). Perhaps they might be talked into doing a clinic and sharing a few of their "secrets". :) :) :) |
If you're chosing a car based on how easy the transmission is to rebuild, you might consider a 911 Turbo (930). 930 transmissions are even easier to work on than 915s.

Peter Zimmerman has posted a multi-part comprehensive rebuild guide online.

Good to hear about the 930 trans.
My interest was which Carrera might be a better basis for a 911 race car. There are advantages to both and I am aware of what they are but did not know about the serviceability. Thx. |
I know someone local to me who is reproducing the tools needed to rebuild G50 transmissions.
He is also working on a detailed repair manual with photographs. The project is 90% complete but languishing due to lack of serious interest from potential buyers. Anyone here interested? |

I'd be interested for sure |
