74 911 engine rebuild

On June 2, I took possession of a 74 911 2.7 including Ca. title. I'm doing a motor and interior and transmission out rebuild. What are the main things to check for on this 2.7 CIS engine? Case savers and head studs are a known. Can anything be done to enhance reliability on this magnesium block? There is about 70,000 on this engine and that last owner drove the heck out of it according one of the car's past mechanics. Thanks--zioo

Have it blueprinted and shufflepinned...helps keep the magnesium where it's supposed to be. And do the oil bypass mod while you're there. Other than that, not much to do (for reliability), and little is needed. No reason why your motor shouldn't do 100,000 miles easy.

Might want to upgrade the oil pump to one of the newer designs.

If you are keeping the CIS, make sure there is a pop-off valve. Also, make sure the chain tensioners are the carrera version / oil pressurized version.

Also, while you are spending money, make sure you've got the external oil cooler. Keeping the oil temps in check is a good way to ensure long life.

The '74s were the only 2.7 (US models) that weren't burdened with all the overheating emissions elements, so you should be good.

Have fun
