How would you safely clean the alternator?

For a 77 2.7 Alternator, it may be a a no-brainer but what would you recommend cleaning the grime off the alternator with?

I assume Soap and water is safe but what about harsher cleaners?

There are cleaners for electrical components but that may be overkill.

Don't use water, it will get in the bearings and destroy them. I would use brake cleaner and keep it off the bearings. Wear safety glasses and gloves, don't get it in your eyes or on your skin or on anything you care about.
