Alternator/Fan/Belt alignment

Hello,

after changing the fan housing + alternator, the belt is not perfect aligned.
The alternator/fan is a tad to much towards the end of the car.

Can this result in real problems later?

thanks for help

You have to be careful about this. The fan shroud rings have different depths machined into the alternator mount base to accommodate different alternator sizes. If you don't have the correct combo of shroud ring and alternator, the alternator fan assembly will not be positioned correctly relative to the crank pulley.

If you tell me more about which fan shroud ring and alternator you have, I should be able to help.

Thanks Tom,

I saw the problem with the depht in the alternator mount base.
We have machined it close to the 930 specs, taken from the original
fan housing. I used the original alternator again.

Only, probably the mistake:
On my original 930 mount base the material left was quite small.
My CNC budy decided to leave 1-2 mm more material on there.

Truly the belt isn`t on full tension yet.
I suspect that the misalignment will be less when
the belttension is correct.
But,as it looks like now, there will be some misalignment left.

The other idea I had, maybe the fan housing is not in
correct position, misaligned to the engine case.
But thats very difficult to see.
The whole installation is a mess, smallest hands required!

thanks

The fan housing location to the case is apparent with the location to the crank pulley. Housing will have slight clearance to the pulley and it will be properly located. if the edge of the housing is actually sitting on the same plane as the inner edge of the pulley, the housing has to be loosened and forced forward to the case.

Solved!

Oh yes, what a nice beginner story!!
I already imagined to remove the fan housing with alternator again.
On my car `87 930 with G50 conversion, the engine is ~ half inch
more to the back of the car, the fan housing instalation is not a nice job here.

I tryed to fasten the fan bolt and surprise surprise, the fan moved
forward and forward. Now it seems +- well aligned.

Its a while ago till I have installed the fan housing.
The fan itselfs was more or less handpushed on the alternatorshaft.

Anyway, thanks for your help gentlemann,
as always, this forum is the place to go!!
