Weld this case or replace it?
I picked up an '83 SC 3.0 that has been wrecked very hard. The engine case has a crack
that runs up the structural webbing behind the flywheel (see pict.) Should I even consider having this welded or just find a good donor case? I realize that the engine needs to be pulled apart and inspected from the inside out. I guess my question is, has anyone repaired a case in this area with success? The 915 transmission in the other picture has a crack/tear in the bellhousing...weld or replace?? Any direction or opinions on this would be appreciated. ![]() ![]() |

IMHO, that case is a throwaway.

I think you could find a used case for very little more than the cost to repair that one. Same with the tranny.

Thanks for the opinions. I've seen what seem to be "good" engine cases anywhere from $500 to $1500. I have not found much on the transmission case however.

I would definitely have the transmission case welded before paying for a new one. Just bolt it to a good engine case for proper alignment.
"structural webbing", I would probably bolt a transmission in place for alignment and have the engine case welded too. but that idea still doesn't settle as well... this is in my drift car, works great ![]() ![]() Last edited by jtmroczk; 09-14-2010 at 07:09 PM.. Reason: added pictures |

I think it depends, if you are in a position to purchuse a new one, then do so.
If not welding is pragmatic, ensure that whom ever preforms the work, does so with percision and has experince in welding such things as cases. Good luck-
