Thick flange SSI - 3.2 heads
My engine is going under the knife soon. I've sourced parts over the years in anticipation. If those parts, I have thick flange SSIs since my car is an '81 SC. But, I have recently bought a set if 3.2 heads as the port sizes are far better than the small port SC heads.
Will the SSIs still work? I need to dig them out of the attic to get a part no. off of them to be sure of what I have. Todd

SSI heat exchangers are not really an upgrade on 3.2L motors because the tube diameter is smaller than the exhaust ports, causing a restriction. I would assume that the same reasoning applies if you are only using the 3.2L heads.

Todd: To answer your initial question, the thick flange SSIs are the correct ones for the 3.2 heads. Actually I don't think they would have worked with the 81 SC heads. The thick flange SSIs not only have the thicker flange, but they also have a short piece of pipe that extends above the flange and slips into the exhaust port on the head. I don't think that pipe extension would fit into the exhaust port on an SC head. Not entirely sure about that... but I'm certain the thick flange is correct for the 3.2 heads.
