Finally started to Rebuild the 2.4 (Updated)
Almost done...5 Jan 2011 new Pics:
Figured I would start a rebuild thread of my 40 yr old while at ATSpeed racing and listen to the masters (meister) if you wish to add or ask a question to my logic. I currently have a 1970 911T with a 1973, 2.4E (had Webers -- sold to return to MFI). As we tore down the motor, I found she had 2.2S P&C’s and stock S cams. This made it easy for me to pick which of my two MFI systems to use (the 013 (S) or 015 (T)) ... I picked the fresh 013 rebuild from Koller /Schwimmer of Bosch, Nuremburg Germany. I will be selling the 015 system, once I get her running. We sent the case out to Ollie’s for the standard updates -- oil by-pass and truing of the case. Cams where sent to John Doughterty (Camgrinder). Heads sent to Anchor Atlantic Group an East Coast company in NJ -- that stamps your name and the company/date when completed. What I am working to buy or need additional advice: - My heat exchangers look worn – do I repair and Hot Jet or buy a good used set here from a Pelican? $$$ is tight. - I have a 003 Bosch Distributor (2.4T w/ a 73 rev limiter); must I change the advance curve? - My starter is old but worked, should I buy a light weight or a rebuild Bosch for a trade-in? - Alternator has the half moon red part on the back – before I pulled the motor, when she sat at idle the gauge would glow red…once I increased the RPM the light would go out. What is the normal issue here? Here are a few pictures for now : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698845.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698903.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698921.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698963.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698980.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284698996.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284699024.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284699045.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1284699060.jpg |

A glowing alternator light is usually a bad diode in the voltage regulator. The regulator clips off the ac sine wave and makes a pulsing dc current. The more diodes, the more pulses, the smoother the dc current. If one or more diodes goes bad, the dc signal gets more intermittent. The alternator light responds to each period of low voltage by lighting up. The glow comes from the fact that incandecent lamps take some time to heat up and produce light. As soon as the lamp starts to glow, the voltage is good again and the lamp shuts off. This repeats at the frequency of the sc pulses. As the revs rise, the good voltage pulses get closer together and so the lamp is off more than it is on and the glow fades. At low rpm, it will just have a faint glow, however.

Looks like a fun project Scott. Did you find a set of heat exchangers yet?

Here are a few pic's when we tore down the motor and tranny:

More older pic's during tear down phase:

I found some Heat Exchangers for a fair price. Here are some Pic's before going to the clean-up phase:

Here are the HE's after a good cleaning - four (4) areas needing welding, and a good coat of alloy heat paint. Total cost invested is around $270... not bad.
My old ones are for sale. Nice. Can't wait to get mine done. All the machine work is done as well and just need the time to get it all together. We are close maybe we can get together some time in Spring and chat....I am sure yours will be running much sooner than mine:D

PM sent. There are a few great Pelicans living very close to Ft Meade and B-More.

Wow, I just pulled my motor (1973.5 911t targa w/CIS) yesterday and will start to take it apart today. Hope it goes as well as yours. I'll keep you posted
Cheers, Gibran |
Scott, your engine is looking great. Beautiful job with lots of attention to detail.

Just back from the shop, the motor looks great. We should have the motor done in 10 days and next is the 915 trans:

Nice. Stupid question -- why is the airbox on prior to putting it back in the car?

It's been some time since I posted a few pic of current projects before I put her on the road.
Here are a few updates to the front bumper oil cooler. I had to sell the larger oil cooler pictured on the first page, due to length and hitting the RS bumper...plus no back space for air flow. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471889.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471905.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471916.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471929.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471940.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471951.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1311471962.jpg |
Here she is at the AT Speed Open House this past weekend.

awesome...!! did you skip a bunch of stuff you can tell us as the last pics show the car on the lift in July...you realize it is almost November now...we need details...please... :-)
Great to hear that it is on the road...ENJOY... Bob |
Hey Scott, good seeing you at Bobs. The engine looks great, enjoy.
Rob |
Nice, you added the passenger side mirror as well. Looks good but completely unusable (I did the same thing). I also noticed your MFI is really close to the throttle bar. When I put mine back together it rubbed and was a bit a extra work to reposition the MFI pump to make it not touch. Just out of curiosity, did you have this same issue?

Chris,
Sorry for the late response - there is no issue at all. Just a bad photo angle. I have about 1000 miles on the motor, the break-in oil was drained and Brad Penn oil replaced for the next 5,000 miles. All adjustments were done...it's a real strong motor. I'll drive her to the Chesapeake Porsche Club after Holiday Party, in Jan 2013. Vr, Scott |
Took a few photos today with the sun out. As you can see I installed the H4's, replaced the vinyl dash plate, made a radio delete to install two stop watches with German made mounts, self painted the spare 1968 (5.5 x 15) Heart Fuchs, and switched over to anodized trim around the windows. Did not install the trim around the windshield -- plan to pull the glass the repair the dash pad this winter.
Enjoy, Scott http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524883.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524894.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524908.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524918.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524926.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524943.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524967.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357524996.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357525035.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357525053.jpg |
Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

It has been 3 years since posting to this thread. I have TTG lights and Cibie hood lights ready for mounting, and plan to install this winter.
Question, who has. Wiring diagram for adding the two sets of lights ? Vr, Scott |
Hey Scott, you can swing by take a look at my Targa it has TTG lights

Update with the alternate steel hood painted and the hood lights installed.

Mark,
Your MFI pump adjustment on my 013 S pump was perfect! It has never run better? Adjusting to the special high compression motor was on mark…Mark ! |
