Piston Rings

Can someone here help me down memory lane?....

In Bruce Anderson's Performance handbook...or maybe one of his similar-sounding responses to Excellence magazine.... he cautions against use of certain brand name piston rings in rebuilds....was it Goetze?.

If so, seems odd as aren't they OEM fitment?...or at least equivalent? Anyone recall this theme? Similar concerns based on their own experience?

Goetze are the factory rings
Deves are the junk that is too hard on the cylinders
I have the book but dont remember. I do the Goetze after glaze breaking the nikilsil.
I wont rering the alucil because of seating problems and glaze thickness.

Thanks, Bruce....I think it was Deves he mentions....maybe others will recall too, just to finish this off. Good call.

NPR is what JE and Wiseco use now. Awesome rings, and they are surprisingly cheap.

If JE is using NPR rings now, what are the JE Pro Seal Rings that they are including with new Piston sets today?

I think the Pro Seal Rings are gapless. Meaning they come big and need to have the ends filed to exactly fit your cylinder.

This info was coming from the guy (cant recall his name!) in the Euro/exotic car dept and from Brian Nutter at Wiseco. The JE pro seal rings are NPR rings.

Total-Seal rings are gapless; Pro Seal rinsg are conventional ones.

ALL rings should be measured and individually fitted for each cylinder.

Is there anything to custom fit with regular rings? I just installed a set of what ever comes from EBS Racing for JE pistons. Fit into the cylinders no problem. I assume they are the right size.

They obviously don't need filing so nothing to be done....right?

I had to cut a whole set of Goetze rings on JEs last year to get the gaps that I needed for spec.
