Priming the oil pump.
It seems to be common practice in the v8 world to pack
a newly rebuilt oil pump with vaseline (petroleum jelly) in order to prime it before the first start. Nobody mentions it here, is this something which just isn't necessary in our engines? andy |

Andy, I think the pump is below the oil level in the tank, so the inlet side of the pump ends up with a small head of pressure on it if the car is sitting level. From that perspective it's already primed.
Contrast that with the V8 situation where the oil sits below the pump and has to be picked up against the flow of gravity before the gears see any lubrication.
