Internal Thermostats

I have been chasing a high pressure leak and now believe it comes from my internal thermostat. I have already replaced my oil pressure sending unit, but after my last race found the same spray of oil in the engine bay.

My thermostat has a screw in the top that has a plastic washer made on to it. The O ring is in good shape so I suspect this screw to be leaking under pressure.

Anyone know how to seal this thing?

Thanks,
neilca

What's the screw for?
Does it tighten down enough to put a crush washer under it? If not I'd put some Permatex thread sealer on it.

The screw was on the early cars into the early 70s. Get one without the screw should be easy.
Looks like the screw had something to do with adjusting the opening temp.

leak

I have seen those leak before, Is it on an early 2.0 case ? If I were you and you are running an engine cooler I would look at the later style without that possible leak area. I have seen the machine work differ a bit on the early sand cast cases when you put the RSR bypass in place of the thermostats you have to check the fit and machine them a bit so they go all the way down and seat on the case. just check it with out the "O" ring to see if it goes all the way home.

I am using a 2.2l magnesium case. I would like to retain the thermostat to protect the cooler from the high pressure of cold oil.

I thought I had seen some thermostats without this screw. I will have to look for a used one.

Thanks,

neilca
