Answer from MSD:
Dear Sir:
*
We do not recommend one spark plug over another. However, normal copper plugs tend to work best with the MSD CD ignitions.
*
The specialty or ‘hype’ plugs are a hotter burning plug. When you couple the hotter plugs with the hotter ignition of the MSD, there isn’t sufficient time for the plug to cool down between firings. Because of this, the plug could possibly begin to glow like a ‘glow plug’ in a diesel engine. When this happens the glowing plug could ignite the air/fuel mixture prematurely as the piston is compressing this mixture. This could lead to pre-ignition and would severely damage the engine. A normal copper plug, 1-2 steps colder than factory recommendation is what we recommend.
*
Choosing the correct plug is a matter of choice and can be a long process until you find a plug that the engine likes and works well with your application.
*
We do recommend using a good quality copper plug, resistive or non-resistive, 1-2 steps colder than factory recommendation. The gap should start at about .035 and you will want to adjust that gap at .005” increments until a nice tan/caramel color on the electrode and/or porcelain.
*
Which way to go when changing the gap?
*
Compressions below 10:1 increase the gap.
Compressions above 10:1 decrease the gap, especially when under boost.
*
This is a good site giving good information about shopping for the right plug. We do not endorse this product; the information is just that good.
