2nd tIme I did it I built a basic hoist with 4x4's and a comealong. Worked perfectly. Have a pic somewhere.

Lift tables are what we use. But we routinely have 3-7 engines on stands so it makes sense to have 3 lift tables. We use the table for engine removal/install and on/off engine stands. Super easy. Not necessarily the best option for DIY one time use.

I have one of the jack adapters we bought years ago to do it on a floor jack. It worked for in/out but you need a really high lift jack to get it onto a stand.

+1 for using a lift table. Makes it much easier.

Lift table is the best way but if you have a hoist (2 post) you can also use one or two of the arms to raise and lower your engine. Just strap it to an arm.

Had the lift tables occupied, used Henry's idea with the 2 post. Worked great. very easy.

Getting it back down was difficult. I had to find something tall enough to support while allowing me to fit an ATV jack under. Then lower it in increments. Jenga anyone?

This is probably the scariest procedure in this thread and would never consider recommending it to people I care about. One wrong move and disaster could strike causing major physical injury or worse death. This is like playing a Russian Roulette that involves too much risk. The two (2) tires make me cringe just to look at this set-up. Of all things why use a set of tires? Just my two-cents.

If you’re a gearhead or enough of one to R&R your own engine, it’s worth getting a cherry picker. They pop up on Craigslist now and then for dirt cheap money. You’ll end up using it once you have it, saves your back, and allows you to solo a lot of projects that would have required more coordination with helpers. And lending it out a lot.

Totally agree, not recommended. I moved recently and really wasn’t set up for doing this work when my clutch went out. The picture makes it looks a lot worse than it was, the tires were the only thing I had high enough to work and they weren’t rolling or wobbly. Not the best, but certainly not at risk of falling.
