how to clean zenith 40's
 

So I bought a 2.2 t engine to put into my 914 I was looking in the carb's and seen alot of gunk I want to soak them in either pine sol or carb cleaner but have no experience with these carb's any one have a how to or recommendation on what I should remove or not remove.. before soaking them

They are pretty straight forward, but a few things to remember:

Before soaking in cleaner, remove all gaskets, o-rings, diaphrams, etc.

The holes in the accel pump nozzles are very tiny and the neck is fragile....They will be plugged for sure. Remove by twisting back and forth while lifting up.

You have a checkvalve and another piece under these nozzles, Don't let them fall out and be lost when you turn the carb upside down.......

Those look pretty neglected - will be a project.

anyone have a picture of the check valve or i can take a pic of the parts i removed and you can point them out

Ok here are a few pics that I have of the tear down.. I cleaned the manifolds but I think I am going to sandblast them and Dispersant coat them it is a coating on turbos and cylinder heads I use to help radiate heat.. The last picture is of the dispersant coating I will be using on the cam cover's valve covers and manifolds..

Sorry for all the pics and question's I am new to the Porsche engine with dreams of working at a shop like Jerry Woods or Bruce Canepa's I have been buying Porsche's to get some real hands on experience in hopes of landing a job in a nice shop.. I come from Turbo cylinder head fabrication and mostly Dohc engine's..

So now that I have the carb body cleaned what how should i go about cleaning the jets and other parts ? are they all universal to each hole or do the need to go back into the exact same hole they came from.. Rite now I have each piece organized so they go back in the exact same spot the came out would it be best to clean them individually or just soak everything together ?

Also anyone now where to get a zenith rebuild kit in California ?

Any help my gasket kit will be here tommarow any input would be great,..

Cleaning is pretty straight forward. the inside where fuel is needs to be very clean. Use several cans of carb cleaner per carb. the small jets at the bottom of the float bowls are also one way check valves but look the same as the little ones at the top. don't mix them up if you choose to remove them. just spray and use a soft small brush to get the crusty stuff off. Blow out passage ways with air. The outside is just for looks, clean or paint or re-plate as you wish. The gasket kit is crap, don't expect quality or instructions. Lube O-rings when re assembling, check float hight. Other than that, your looking good

I tried forever to find one of them. Never did but found a donor carb in the parts section. Check with al lkosmal on the 911 forum he might have some.

I just bought three of those this past week from a guy on Ebay that was selling both the springs and diaphragm caps. He was nice enough to just sell me the springs only for a very reasonable price. You might check there.

Cleaning the jets works well with an air compressor and one of the needle ends that you use to blow up a football or basketball.

My Zeniths looked similar in starting condition to yours when I rebuilt them. The accelerator pump (transition circuit) nozzles were a pain to get cleaned out. I used air and ultimately also a fine strand of copper wire to get them flowing free.

Go to your local NAPA or otherwise and get yourself a can of carb cleaner (not aerosol but rather the kind you soak parts in). I bought a gallon can but probably could have gone smaller. It'll last me several lifetimes! Put all the little pieces into the basket, dunk and let it sit overnight. When they come out and you hose them off with a light spray of aerosol carb cleaner they will look nearly new.

I also disabled/removed the aux. decel fuel enrichment circuit. I used lead shot in the specific jet, etc. to disable it and then used vacuum caps on the nipples at each port. Those ports sure make carb synch easy with a set of vacuum gauges!

OK so here is what I have done so far the only thing I don't remember how to get back together is in the last picture.. Not sure what the are called but the solex jet on the left that is screwed in on the left and the tubes to the right of the carb on the bench... as you can see how I have them in the second to the last picture is wrong and looking for the correct way to put them back..

Touched these up with some 60 grit to get rid of the ledge..

Not real sure of your question but in the last picture you have the air correction jets installed but the emulsion tubes laying on the bench. The e tubes are installed before the air correction jets. Don't forget those "tee" shaped "plugs" under the injector nozzles too.

Got off my phone and went to the desktop for better pics. You have the "plugs" installed in the air correction/emulsion tube orifices. Those go under the injector nozzles with the slotted end upwards.

Try to Google "Zenith 40" and find a breakdown of the carb. This will help you a great deal. PM me if you have more questions

So the t shaped nozzle's that I have next to the E tubes go under the injector ? Just so I get the lingo corret

E tubes are the long skinny thing with hole's
Air correction jets are are the treaded things that say solex on them
the shaped plug is what looks like a screw with no threads ?

I have a pair of Zeniths that are crying out for a strip and clean. Had heard that the accelerator pump diaphrams were NLA. Does the kit you have include the pump diaphrams:confused: Reluctant to strip them down just to find that the diaphrams fall apart but that they are unobtainium.....

The Zenith rebuild kit (made in italy, for sale here) has the accelerator pump diaphragms in there. Kinda pricy but that's the only place I have seen them.

I belive the pelican Parts kit has them...

Wheels, nice job! Care to share your secret? what did you end up using to get them so clean? Obviously you made a satisfying project out of this. THe results speak for themselves.

I just use Water and pine sol with maybe 2 can cans of carb cleaner small wire brushes and some of those 3m abrasive pads to polish the brass parts..

I ordered so new timing chain cover gaskets I just put the old ones on for now even thought they are covered with a gallon of sealant..

what would an engine like this be worth ? it is a 4r-5r case with no serial numbers on it ? original internals and good leak down numbers ?

So I have been cleaning up other parts of the engine and was going to finish the other carb today when I noticed the other carb has a broken shaft is this something I should fix or just buy another carb ?

I used a weber unit, could not find a zenith one. You must drill it out to make it fit.
