How to remove camshaft?
 

1987 911. Got the rocker arms out. Separated heads from cam tower. According to "the book", the cam shaft should slide out. I have approx. .25" axial play and then it seems to hit a hard stop. I don't see anything holding it up from coming out. How to remove?

I will assume the cam turns, if it does but does not slide out it is likely oil varnish at the journals. Soak the assembly in solvent if possible if not a good carb cleaner may help clean up the journals and help to remove it.

Cam turns very smoothly. Seems to hit a hard stop on the way out. I'll try the solvent.

Tried solvent. No change. Seems like something bottoms out on non-pulley end. If I remove sheet metal plug on the non-pulley end, will the camshaft come out that end?

The answer is YES. A few sharp raps and the plug and camshaft came out. Interestingly, it now also comes out the original end. Bearing surfaces look smooth. probably knocked a burr off somewhere, although I don't see it.

Great news. I was racking my brain, trying to come up with a suggestion.

Whatever was holding it back was definitely metal on metal. I could hear it clunk. Cover looks undamaged. I'll press it in and use Curil to seal it. This is the third stuck part on this endeavour. The second one was "separate engine and transmission". Sounded simple enough, but that too turned into a multi day affair. Thanks for the suggestions.

PS Second camshaft slid right out.
