Question - can ( 964 ) 3.6 pistons and cylinders fit a 3.2 case

i know $$ would be involved, but what would it take

They will fit but it is quite a dance.
First you must bore the case to 105mm ?
Next you turn the cylinders down to 105mm ?
The next process is a little tricky. You have to slot the stud holes in the cylinders to match the different stud spacing on the case. This is tricky because you need a long mill and they tend to want to flex as you offset bore the existing hole.
Last thing you need is a barrel shim/ base gasket that compensates for the shorter barrel. I believe the shim needs to be 2.80-3.10mm.
We've done it and it works but it's a lot of dancing around.
At one time we had a large number of early 3.6 cylinder sets and the dance seemed to make sense.
The late style cylinders (with gasket) will not work because by offset boring the stud hole you encroach on the gasket groove.
Next you have to deal with the piston height/ pin location. If memory serves me the best way to deal with this is the grind the crank rod journals to fit a set of 3.0 rods. When ground properly (large radius fillet) the crank gets stronger, the rods are better because of the 10mm bolts vs 9mm of the 3.2 and the rod is longer to compensate for the piston pin location.
A custom set of rods will do the same thing.

Henry - thanks for the information. You aren't kidding when you say its a dance. I didn't realize this. There is most likely a much simpler solution to increasing cc's in a 3.2 - I will start saving my pennies

Why don't you buy a 3.6 and swap it in? That might be the cheapest way to bigger displacement.

After reading Henry's post - that is my thought exactly - ;)

Sometimes the dance is half the fun unless of course, you have two left feet.
