911S 2.2 cam grind choice?
I have enjoyed reading all the threads but I have not been able to answer my questions. I am looking for suggestions on the best cam for solid low and medium RPM torque and drivability (safe but spirited driving and maybe an auto cross).
I have a 1970, T case, stock T crank, Webber 40's and good 2.2S p&c, I have read about the E, Solex and S cams and am leaning toward an E or Solex grind??? -What issues will I have to deal with running the above cams with my 2.2S p&c? -What recommended "improvements" should I include on this engine rebuild? ie. 2.0T heads re-worked to? distributor? -Any thoughts on assembled performance? Thank You - for your suggestions and Happy New Year! Bill '70 914-6 (enjoyed my car since 1978). |
Welcome Bill,
You have a couple of nice choices from Dougherty racing cams. DC30 (mod solex) DC40 (mod S) Based on what you are looking for, go with the DC30 as it gives you a little both the E and S. Heads.... 2.0 liter heads would need to be modded to fit 2.2. Better solution is to source a set of 2.2-2.4 heads. A much better head. Case savers, piston squirters, oil bypass mod and a 3.0 liter oil pump would be on my list. |

Just to add some additional thoughts to Aaron's,..... If you want "solid low & medium RPM torque", your best choices are either your stock T cams or perhaps an E cam. This fit the "mission" better than Solex or Mod- S. 2.0 heads are the worst heads (powerwise) Porsche made; your 2.2 heads can either be used as is with the T or E-cams for max torque and throttle response, or opened up to match a Solex or Mod-S cam. Those 2.2S pistons will really help you due to their compression ratio, however be careful about ignition advance with T or E cams, given CA's poor gas. |
Thank you Aaron and Steve for your guidance.
This is solid informtion for my rebuild. I will keep you informed. Bill S. |
