Case Saver or Time Cert?
The 1977 2.7L 911S that I bought came with very little history. Some trashed documents and other things and I have been working on it pretty consistently. Almost have all of my rust areas (not many, but gas tank area and by the jack plate) and I started breaking down the motor. Well the car had 112k miles on it and I found receipts for cylinder head R&R and such at 110k miles. The previous owner had died, car sat up for years, etc etc. I got it running, drove it down the block and then started the teardown / restoration.
Well I noticed the engine had definitely had work done somewhere...just don't know how far down. Rocker arms were stamped with cyl number by little dents in them and the head studs are all still torqued nicely. Also this motor has pressure fed tensioners on it and Turbo lower valve covers. And someone had plugged the EGR ports in the head as well as removed the thermal reactors. Anyway I got the CIS off and got to looking. Are these pictures INSERTS? Makes me curious if the motor was rebuilt totally?!? Either way it ran fantastically and I'm not doing anything more than changing oil leak gaskets, adjusting rockers, and cleaning it all up before putting back in the car. So again, Are these pictures of INSERTS of some kind? If so, what kind are they? Im more concerned with the rust on the studs. In the era of studding a case the dilivars were usually put in to replace the steel studs. Dilivars are non magnetic. If those are steel, they are still pulling the magnesium.

I will check them with a magnet and let you know what I find. But why are ALL of the case bolts and studs slightly rusted? This is a good indication that the engine has at least had heads / jugs removed in it's past? I have another question...what are the 'VERSUS' on the case studs? Is that factory? I can tell you the barrel nuts were are exactly right. I kept changing my torque wrench to see when they moved and got them to all move just a hair over factory Spec. Whoever did it, did it right...but again are we looking at inserts? Thanks, Patrick |

So, no one can confirm that what I'm seeing is in fact a threaded insert at the least? I have never owned a 911 before so I really have nothing to compare it to. I'm bringing my camera to the PCA local region meeting tonight (my first one) so perhaps they will shed light on it. Thanks, Patrick |
You do indeed have an insert. It looks like a Time cert to me as a case saver is smaller spiral insert.

I too believe they are Time Serts - just waiting on someone to agree. Thanks. I don't think Case Savers go in that deep.
I know the age old debate of Time Sert vs. Case Saver, but in this case hey, it's working and I'm not about to rebuild it! Interesting points arise with what else could have been done to this motor in the process. I sure wish I had more information on it (Did they split the case or not?; What studs did they use?; etc). From what I understand, Time certs require machining of the case to install properly. That would imply that the cases were split to do this. I'd bet the motor had a complete rebuild at some point past.
