Cylinder Heads - Broken Fins - OK?

I purchased a set of used but reconditioned heads that were damaged during shipping. Here are some representative pics of the damage:

My questions: Are these heads suitable for use on a 2.7L? Or has enough damage been done that they will no longer adequately cool due to the reduction in heatsink area? Any possibility of repair?

Thanks for the help.

That would break my heart.

Ideally you should contact the people that sold you these and complain about lack of packaging...
They'll probably refer you to the people that delivered them to you.

I hope someone makes good but if they don't you could use them.

Do you have the pieces that broke off? You may be able to get them welded back on by someone who knows what they are doing.

They will work without problems, do not attempt to bend the fins back unless you are familiar with working cast aluminum.

I can't stand getting things underpackaged and damaged, sorry it happened to you.

Edit, I would replace those exhaust studs with regular ones if you decide to keep the heads.

Thanks for the opinions. I have contacted the seller, and it seems that we are both victims of the company he used to package/ship these. The seller is a stand-up guy and is working with those that packaged/shipped for reimbursement.

The really bad part is that some of the heads have damage on the oil-sealing surfaces for the cam housing. I'm not sure how I'm going to fix that yet...

What is the proper way to ship heads?

The only time I shipped heads was I boxed three heads per box. I used heavy duty boxes to start. I cut plywood the same size that would fit in the box. I bolted the three heads down to the plywood with space between the box and the outer extremities of the heads. I stood cardboard cut to size and surrounded the heads with 3-4 layers of this stood up cardboard. Finally, I covered the tops of the heads with 3-4 layers of cardboard cut to size. I taped the crap out of the boxes.

When the heads were returned to me, the shop took the effort and packaged them back up identically to the way I shipped them (with the same packing material). Not a single scratch was on any of my heads when returned.

I'm just wondering what others do when shipping heads.

I sent my heads across the country and used two tight layers of bubble wrap surrounding each head. Then I placed each head in a separate numbered and labeled box and then put one more tight layer of bubble wrap around each of the smaller boxes. By now the boxes containing one head each are almost 1 foot by 1 foot, but the weight was not too bad. The heads went into a large box with foam peanuts packed into the remaining space and that is how they came back, no problems.

I used the materials available at my local UPS store.

As ugly as they are, they should still be fine. especially since the damage seems to be on the intake side of the heads. The exhuast side gets much hotter. If the damage on the face where the cam carriers go is less than a few thousands the sealant should keep them sealed.

Good man,..Thats the correct way to ship heads so they are not damaged, no matter what the shipping company does.

We do a LOT of head work for people all over the country as well as the world and I've shipped them as far as Qatar and Australia this way without any issues.

It takes a little extra time but its well worth the efforts.

The middle picture has a crack on the lip that's bent up on the exhaust side. The more I look at these, the more I don't like them...

Excellent! Then I got good advice from our head re-builder.

I kept my plywood and boxes as I have a few more engines to do.
