It's a trap...

What inspections do I need?
I have the case split. What inspections should I do and what do I need to have done professionally?

Send the crank , rods, and case to a 911 specific machine shop. A 3.0 usually doesn't need anything done to the case, but mine needs to be align-bored back to standard.
Have the shop clean the case, pull the oil squirters and clean in there too. Micropolish and magnaflux the crank. They'll inspect it while it's there. Have them refurbish the rods. It's up to you if you want to get new bearings if the old ones look ok. I erred on the safe side and got new ones. |

Also have your psitons and cylinders measured if you do not have a decent bore gage setup. Same for the heads - have them check the valve guides for wear.

Check all the chain sprockets/gears for wear on the side of the teeth. If there's wear you'll need all new sprockets/gears and new chains. It's up to you if you want to update/replace the tensioners. Cylinders I couldn't tell you much about inspecting them as I ended up just buying new ones for mine. Inspect the cams for pitting, check the rocker arm bushings for scratches. If there are scratches on the bushings, you'll need to have them rebushed, which means regrinding the rocker arms and the cams. Check the rocker arm shafts for scratches too. I had tons on mine and ended up just replacing all of them since I was also getting the rocker arms rebushed. While the engine is apart, you might want to do a CIS refresh. Replace all the vacuum lines, consider having the WUR rebuilt, and be sure to replace all the rubber fuel lines. |
