Pulley and Fan Rubbing
I just started my engine tear down and came across evidence that my fan and pulley have been rubbing up against each other. Any thoughts or experience with anything similar?
Thanks in advance, ![]()

Fan and pulley or fan and housing. If its the housing, the alternator isnt tight and square in the housing.
Put the fan on the alternator and spin as you tighten the nuts on the back. Keep spinning each time you tighten to make sure youre clear. If the pulley is the problem, make sure therer is a thrust washer behind the bevel lock on the shaft. Bruce |

Yea, I'm not seeing the fan hitting the housing. Something else here with the housing not mounted correctly under the big band clamp. That wear or rub is not on a moving part. My car "did" have an issue with the fan when I bought it, the fan itself was not pulled up tightly on the alternator shaft due to the woodruff key getting jammed out of place. Caused a loose belt and wobbly fan and a repair job for me.

Just a suggestion. If you want people to follow your thread, post new issues under the original thread heading.

Targa - Point taken
Others - You're right, I mischategorized the issue. Its the fan housing and pulley that have been rubbing.

The two possible causes that come to mind are;
1. Improperly installed or loose fan housing. 2. Excessive endplay of #1 main bearing. #1 is the most likely as it is easy to overlook.

The fan housings sometimes crack at the "spokes" that support the alt. A careful examination is necessary to insure that this is not the case.
