3.2 ss

While reading about this motor, I have not been able to determine if the 3.0 cylinders are replaced when a 98 MM high compression piston is used?

Any input would be great.

Yes, that's how you end up at 3.2 litre. I don't think it's necessary though. I have a 3.0 with 10.5:1 JE pistons, twin plug and 46 Webers and I think it'll run with most any 3.2. The money for the new cylinders and pistons is better spend elsewhere in my opinion. A 3.0 is 95mm bore and a 3.2 SS is the same stroke but with a 98mm bore.

A built 3.0 will rip; no need for cylinders if the 95s you have are in good shape.

+1 if you have good Nickasils just re-ring and go. But if you have Alusils then you might as well go for an increase in displacement.

If you are planning on using anything other than the CIS intake, and CIS cams then you should consider different pistons, so if your going with different pistons then you might as well do a displacement increase as well.

Can the 3.0 cylinders be reliably bored? Or, do we use 3.2 cylinders?

Thanks for responding

Lindy, that is seriously clean motor. Looks great.

Most engine builders will tell you that you cannot bore the 3.0 SC 95 mm cylinders to 98 mm. The problem is that the seal ring groove at the top of the cylinder has very little material left after re-boring. Most people use the 3.2 95 mm cylinders, that do not have the seal ring groove, for the re-bore to 98 mm.

That said.....We have a board member in Germany who has bored the 3.0 SC cylinders to 98 mm and is reporting no problems with them.

Thanks for the insight, I now have a much better understanding.:)

"Most people use the 3.2 95 mm cylinders, that do not have the seal ring groove, for the re-bore to 98 mm."

Which years did not have the seal ring groove?

The Carrera 3.2 from '84 to '89 in 95mm.

The 1984-89 3.2 cylinders do not have the ring groove

Either the Mahle Nikasils or the KS Alusils can be used

If you need a set, let me know. I have them available
