Seal Ring Between Head and Cylinder Barrel got spat out!

After rebuilding my motor in 2010, the 964 has been on the rack for the last couple of months. Mainly because the mechanic is slow and busy on other stuff. Plus there was a foot of snow outside most of that time. I brought the 964 in for what I thought was a hole or gap in the heat exchanger / exhaust gasket, changed all six and found that number 3 cyl 'spat' out the gasket between the cylinder barrel and head.... the result was that it appears that one of the air cool fins on the 'barrel' burnt. I replaced the sealing ring, reset valves, replaced intake and now good to go. Could it be that I missing some engine tin? Please see pictures. Wondering what would cause this and if anyone has experience with this. | ||

Hi Alex, Is your head sealing surface flat?

Not the greatest of pictures, but it doesn't look like the gasket was installed correctly or had a good bite on one side. Looks like it was leaking for a while.

looks like the cylinder was cut to allow a sealing ring which basically removes the outer area of the head to cylinder contact surface. the ring is a fluid barriar only. the compression seal relies on a clean and true metal to metal contact on the remaining surface. the real way and more expensive, is to use updated cylinders and flycut the heads to fit them.

It's a 91 and the heads were machined from a good shop before i re installed but I didn't do anything to make sure the top of the cylinder barrel was totally flat. i drove with the gasket blown for about 100kms. Prior to that my 02 sensor that was stripped made the same noise and so when I took it in to get that fixed, i figured the O2 sensor came out again and then found out the seal ring was blown out. I immediately made this putt putt sound and my mileage dropped in half... i have since replaced with new seal, torqued it up properly and have driven about 400 kms in the last couple of days. still burning oil !! might be a leak from tranny or hose. I had replaced the steering fluid which was also an issue. This 1991 has 327,000 kms on it now so i've slowly changed up almost everything! next thing is a new set up coils to hopefully correct a slight idle hunt situation. jumps between 900 and 1100 rpm my next project: check throttle micro switch | ||

i'll take some better pictures and post. It looks like the sealing ring was pretty even all the way around....
