Measuring CAM distance

What type of feeler gauge is used in Wayne's book, How to rebuild Porsche 911 engines, to measure the distance between the CAM sprocket and the 3 foot straight edge for the sprocket alignment phase?

vernier so you can do depth

when I did this, for probably a variety of reasons I drove myself nuts getting repeatable readings. I even made a diagram and spreadsheet - turned out that the original shim count was correct. I wonder how important this is, we are talking very small angles.

Just make sure you are right on the addition and subtraction. Start by getting all the thrust on the cam then start measuring. Spec, +/- .25mm
Lots of time when some one else has set the cams, you can see the wear on the gear at the cam, their math wasnt accurate...

I had rather the same experience. It was before spread sheets, or at least ones I had available, but I made a plot of all the varying readings. It was a two person operation, which I did with just me. The subsequent wear showed I was at least close enough.

Later I purchased the Stomski tool, which holds a true straight edge rigidly. And by then I had depth micrometers. I was even a bit disappointed that on the first try I was within spec and didn't have to change anything. And my caliper's depth measurement gave just as accurate results given the tolerances.

Plus you can purchase an attachment for calipers which will create a wide base for depth measurement, insuring perpendicularity.
