Used Crank Visual Inspection--What should I look for?
I bought a used 964 crank on ebay and I'd like to know for my own knowledge how to inspect the crank. I'll be taking it to a local shop to do a full inspection and balance but what should I look for?

The journal surfaces should be smooth and you should not be able to catch your fingernails on any surface imperfections.
You can also hang the crank from a lifting strap and ring it by tapping with a brass hammer on the counterweights to check for cracks. Your machinist will inspect the journals with a micrometer to ensure they have not worn beyond the repair limits. |
