Early Turbo Case ID

Guys,

I stumbled across what I believe is an early turbo/3.0 case today and want to make sure, I did not want to take a chance on missing this one. The only numbers I could find on it were the 930.101.104 and then 64D 2646.

I picked it up anyway.

My intentions with this is to build a 3.0 or 3.1 short stroke. I have a pretty wicked 2.5SS in my car now but the above motors are kind of my "Dream Motor" and will be buying the necessary parts over the next year or so.

Thanks for any help.

Jimmy

I just looked, and I have 930.101.103 on my left case, and 930.101.104 on the right side case half on my 1976 Turbo Carrera. I think they may be the same case as a 3.0 Carrerra also

I am pulling mine apart this weekend, so if there is anything else you would need to know.......

930 case

Look at the flywheel seal area, early turbo opening is just a bit over 3 1/4 in. and the late 9 bolt seal is about an inch larger in dia. that is the easiest visual.

Jimmy, my 930/02 case castings are 930.101.103.3R & 930.101.104.3R. Good luck on that deal.

Thanks a lot guys, really appreciated.

The 64D is the cue not the casting numbers.

I believe that is a two year only case very nice transplant into an early 911 or 914, will mate to a 901 box if you do not build too much TQ into the motor. For your 3.1 97 cylinders can be had then custom pistons to get the compression back up for no turbo.

BTW nice find, hope it all checks out. Mine needed a bit of work.

PFM,

Planning on going with either LN Nickies in 98mm for a 3.0SS or his 100mm for a 3.1SS and probably JE 10:5:1 comp which LN provides with the barrels.

I will be buying the parts for this build over the next year+ or so, in no rush with this build.

The current motor in my car now is a pretty high strung 2.5SS (246 RWHP) and I have planned on a "Freshen Up" short of 10K miles which will be some time end of next year or a bit more which gives me plenty of time to collect whats needed. I have a set of Extreme modded heads on it now and was saving up for a set of their own designed heads and some 93mm Nickies for a 2.7SS which would be a cool motor. I am hooked on the short stroke high reving motors and figured if I was going with the new Nickies and Extreme heads anyway, why not go for the bigger SS motor. I can use the Pauter modded 66 crank, GT-3 oil pump, PMO 46s and even the pauter Rods in my current motor. These parts would have less than 10K miles on them, the crank would be freshened up, I think the rods could be used again, send them back to Pauter to be checked out/shot peened, etc.

Well, this is my plan anyway.

Thanks for all the info on the case, big help

Well your reading my mind Jimmy. I'm in the process of building a 3.1SS right now. Just got my 66mm crank back that was modified for the 2" NASCAR rod bearings. I'm using a 930/02 case, 100mm LN's, 100mm JE's, etc, etc. I will be starting a build thread in a few days.

Jimmy18E 06-08-2011 04:00 PM

Mark,

I believe you were running a hot 2.6SS for a while, bumping up to a 3.1SS will be a step up. Looking forward to your build thread, I will be following it closely and will probably have some questions for you.

What is one of these cases worth these days?

fastfredracing 06-09-2011 07:55 AM

There was a complete early 3.0 turbo motor for sale in the classifieds, over winter.
I think had some issues, and he wanted something like 7k.

Jeff Alton 06-11-2011 01:21 PM

I have one I will be parting out shortly with twin plug heads....
