case plugs

Hi guys, does anyone know if its alright to use brass to replace the oil galley plugs on a mag. case?Someone said ollies uses brass but I don't know if its on a aluminum case or a mag. one.I'm thinking dissimilar metal corrosion.Thanks,T.C.

Personally...I use threaded plugs..aluminum..not that I don't trust the press in ones...it's just easier down the road to pull out threaded ones.
You can get them from McMaster-Carr or other places...in many sizes...and with indented hex drive.
You can also get brass too...or steel....but I like to stay with the closest metal I can for the same reasoning as you...corrosion.

Just a heads up, some of the plugs will block internal passages or block the oil rrelief pistons if they are screwed in too far. One plug in particular is the large one behind the fan. It will block off the oil passage. My next race motor I will use press in plugs.

Good point...I didn't know that.
I will have to look at mine very carefully.
Thanks.

Ollies used brass plugs on my mag case. They look like freeze plugs.

HawgRyder 06-26-2011 12:05 PM

Damn...I hate it when people call them freeze plugs.
They are core plugs...and...if inserted correctly...they will NOT pop out before the block cracks.
I have repaired many boat engines that the owners thought the plugs would protect them from freezing...but the block cracked and a complete replacement was called for.
Sorry for the rant...but it just bugs me.
