3.2 Twin Plug Q's
1. What would be realistic budget to twin plug a 3.2 not inlduing ignition?
2. Looking at Clewetts Management/ ignition and throttle bodies. Any other options out there worth while? Car is dedicated track. 3. This is a Euro motor with 964 cam and heads been ported and polished. What would be realistic expectation with the above mods? |
How much work are you doing and how much is the shop?

You are looking at an engine drop, pulling half the motor apart to get the heads off, about 200% "while you are at it" stuff, sourcing a twin-plug dizzy or going to something like XDI, rebuilding and re-timing everything.
I'd put the estimate for a drive-in and drive out at about $8,000 to 10,000. Why do you want to go twin-plug? Are you getting detonation? |

Wanting to get more power out of motor and just starting to look at 3.2 with twin plugging, new ignition, throttle bodies and management vs 3.6 transplant. |
There is not much sense twin plugging a stock, or basically stock, motor. Where it becomes really valuable is high RPM (8K or so) and high compression, with intake (and exhaust) to match. It allowed me to run a nominal 10.3/1 2.7 on pump premium. (Those clever engineers at Porsche, of course, have figured out how to run motors at over 11/1 on pump premium, which we can't hope to do with our 2 valve heads and whatnot).
The Electromotive twin plug spark system is basically bombproof, whether in the early stand-alone version, or combined with programmable electronic fuel injection. Set it and forget it. But if one wanted to delete the distributor, you could use the single plug version. Isn't the number one modification for pumping up a 3.2 going to ARP rod bolts? Second most popular is 98mm Ps and Cs? |
If the car is a dedicated track car you should be sure you know and plan for restricted modifications in the class you want to run in.
Twin-plugging, cams, porting or engine swap as you describe, depending on the series or group you run in, might bump you into the "open class" where you will find yourself trying to complete with big boost, slicks, aero, traction control, PSM and other things that may be disheartening... Not that I followed that advice myself... |
Drilling and tapping the heads is about $600
A good distributor is about $2800 with wires. Tear down and rebuild, who knows? You won't see any performance gains with twin plugs unless you plan to make other changes as well. The purpose of twin plugs is to control the burn of a high compression motor running a lot over overlap and lift with the cam. Without compression and cams, twin plugs won't gain anything except a really cool looking engine bay.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1309441279.jpg |

Nice motor. |
The existing motor is a euro motor that has the higher compression with 964 cams, heads have been p & p, arp bolts and headers. I was looking at getting more out of the motor and feel that I have a good base to start with. I did not know how much the head work would be to twin plug and use clewett's ecu for twin plugged motors with the pro throttle bodies.
Am off base on thinking this route? Currently not planning on racing just wanted more power out of the car for the de's Thanks |
