chipped 2.2S pistons
Are these pistons usable?
Would you describe them as "like new"? Would you post them forsale without mentioning the chips in the skirts or showing it clearly in a photo? Please let me know what you think or if I'm over reacting. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() thanks, dug

If I was buying them and was not told about the defects, i would be tight.
Now, when these pistons are mated with a 2.4 crank the pistons have to cut a relief on the 4 corners for crank clearance. Its about a 3/16 radius. So you can trim them up and weigh them and will be just fine for sale. Bruce |

So you're saying it looks like a previous owner didn't know to clearance them before using with a long stroke and they made contact.
But if I have them clearanced, then they may still be usable? It was my intention to use them for a 2.4, so I would have to do it anyway, is that correct? Thanks for the insight. cheers, dug

Honestly, I would not put anything in my engine that looked like that, even if you radius the corner.
Piston traveling down the bore driven presumably by the starter motor. Piston strikes crankcase web. Piston skirt sustains damage. Think of the stress in the pin bore and the rest of the piston as well. These are aluminum and aluminum work-hardens and eventually breaks-- coming to an abrupt stop at the end of its travel cannot be good for the structure. I would personally use them as ashtrays but that's just me. Given the cost of a rebuild these days it does not pay to take the slightest risk.

What I think I know..i looks like the skirts are actually bent? if so is junk! (sudden stoppage,cracked, and and the like) ..if not ..I would blend it all re weigh and install

In any case they don't look "like new." I'd be peeved if I bought those and the seller didn't tell me.

skirt
When you install 2.2 S pistons in a 2.4 (with 70.4 stroke) engine that area has to be removed to clear the crankshaft, so they may be fine for that.

They look like they may have dropped on the floor, I cannot tell without firsthand inspection. If so, I would not use them in anything.

Well, it didn't happen in shipping because they were packed quite well, double layer bubble wrapped, and the chipped pieces were not found in the wrapping with the pistons. I am going to ask for a refund.
