Help wanted on 2.2 main and rod end bearings

Ok, so Ive spent the last 2-3 years sourcing and building a 1971 2.2 engine with Zenith carbs and marreli dizzy. Didnt spilt the engine, stripped it down as far as the crank case with rods. All running sweet on a test bench, then comes a deep down knocking sound, :confused:the sort you know isn't valves, cam chains etc. Stopped the engine made some back checks, not got timing wrong tried with belt off to eliminate the alternater. Sounds the loudest from the sump region towards the rear of the engine. Cut a long story short now stripped the engine and can see metal pick on the main and rod end bearings, slight marks on the mains, but think these might clean up. Not sure about the rod ends, cleaned them up and reassembled dry on the crank, there is quite a bit of sideways movement and slight up and down, but all appear the same, does this sound right? I might have to post a link to youtube video or something to show what I mean.

Anyway first of, would a worn rod end bearing make the knocking noise suggested? and if so anybody recommend a supplier of 25thou over size bearings for the crank and rod ends , Currently both these are standard.

If you have a knock it is inside a big end rod cap.

Uber,

I have a '70 2.2E engine in my car.

I just had one of the crankshaft plugs fall out of my crank and the # 1 rod bearing failed due to lack of oil. The rod knock is unmistakable really, just like you said, it is hard to assign the noise to anything else. (the knock on my engine was also in the back and low) I feel lucky that I shut down prior to the rod coming out the side of the block. As it is I have to do all the magnesium case machining and mods, new crank, 5 rods reconditioned, one replaced, new bearings and gaskets, oil pump upgrade while I am there. I am using the cylinders, heads and pistons that were in the engine as my compression readings were very good. It is quite stunning to add up the repair costs of this, and we are not talking about a rebuild either, just a repair.

The main bearings look much better in your case than mine looked. My sump screen had copper "foil" like bits in it.

Measure your crankshaft carefully, the #1 rod journal was WAY out of round on my crankshaft.

Best of luck,

Wade

taken the crank to an engine shop today to be checked out if it needs a regrind or not. Hope not as oversize bearings seem to be expensive and hard to source!
